Three army jawans patrolling the Maidan were attacked by a group of men on Thursday evening. A Fort William spokesman said the army patrol was drawing up a demolition list of “unauthorised shops” near the Esplanade bus terminus and Curzon Park, which angered local youths and shop-owners.
“The jawans were attacked with bamboo sticks and other weapons,” the spokesman said. The army has embarked upon a drive to identify unauthorised stalls and ask the state machinery to demolish them.
The patrol was administered first-aid and complaints from both Fort William and the shop-owners were lodged at Maidan police station.
