Fiat tops up diesel tank for fast drive

Mumbai, March 12: Fiat India today announced that the diesel powered versions of its Palio and Adventure models, based on Fiat’s 178 platform, are ready to be rolled out.

Fiat Palio, after its impressive debut, was slackening as its rivals — Telco’s Indica and Hyundai’s Santro — successfully touted its fuel efficiencies.

The price tags for the diesel version is still under wraps. Fiat is aiming to sell over 8,000 units of diesel Palio, slated to be rolled out later this month, and Adventure diesel by December.

“We expect to sell 42,000-43,000 units of all Fiat models, out of which 20 per cent will be diesel powered cars — Palio and Adventure,” commercial director Ananda Gupta said at the industrial launch here today.

Over 67,000 diesel-powered cars were sold in B segment last year. The company expects to sell 10-15 per cent more in the next two to three years, he said.

Fiat India chairman and managing director Alberto Montanari said Palio and Adventure would be equipped with 1910 CC diesel engines and they will be priced competitively, he added.

“Fiat has already begun production of Palio Diesel. About 400-500 units are ready at the plant,” he said.
