Calcutta, Feb. 27: The municipal affairs department will realise the cost of water supplied by the CMDA and the Calcutta Municipal Water and Sanitation Authority to the civic bodies within CMDA area.
Municipal affairs and urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya today said the municipalities owed Rs 350 crore to the water-supply agencies. “We will deduct 5 per cent towards water-supply charges from the annual grants given to the municipalities. From now on, they will have to pay 50 per cent of the new bills immediately,” he added.
At a meeting with the chiefs of 41 civic bodies yesterday, Bhattacharya said the public health engineering department will hand over the waterworks it controls to the respective civic authorities from April 1. “Then the civic bodies will have to maintain them.”
