Dum Dum murder case hearing starts

lThe trial of the twin murder case in Dum Dum, in which CPM’s zonal committee member Dulal Banerjee was allegedly involved, started on Monday. The hearing of the case began almost a year after the incident took place. It was held in the ninth additional district judicial magistrate’s court in Alipore. On March 5, 2002, Chandan Chakraborty and Sanjib Goswami were murdered. Dulal and eight others were allegedly involved in the incident. Four of the accused are still absconding. DC, DD (I) Soumen Mitra said the case was delayed on “medical grounds” put forward by the defence lawyers and also due to the prolonged lawyers’ strike last year-end. Two police officers were questioned by the additional magistrate on Monday, he added.

Vehicle check at Salt Lake

Three persons were detained at Salt Lake’s gate no. two during an anti-crime vehicle-checking drive, which started on Monday. Additional superintendent of police Ajay Nand said the three were travelling on an autorickshaw. “Police seized bottles of liquor which people were carrying in their vehicles,” he added. The drive started from Monday evening at all the exit points of the township.

Eviction drive

Dwellers of more than 30 illegal shanties and shops in front of Falguni Abashan, Karunamoyee and FD block were evicted on Monday. The drive was conducted by the police and the Salt Lake Municipality, officials said.

Scientist dies

Pramatha Nath Nandi, a pioneer in the field of microbiology, died on February 15. Nandi was associated with a number of institutions including Bose Institute. He came in touch with Rabindranath Tagore while teaching at Visva Bharati. Nandi is survived by his wife and son, sources said.

Flight schedule

Singapore Airlines has revised its flight schedule. As per the new timings, SQ415 from Calcutta to Singapore will operate on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, departing at 11.50 pm and arriving at 6.25 am. SQ416, the return flight, will depart from Singapore at 9.05 pm and land at 10.35 pm.

Truck strike off

The Federation of West Bengal Truck Operators’ Association has withdrawn its strike temporarily after receiving assurances from the government that disputes on over-loading, minimum freight rate and decentralisation of national permits will be discussed. In a meeting with transport minister Subhas Chakraborty, the minimum freight rate was fixed at Rs 9.50 per km.

Bandh call

The Trinamul Congress has called a bandh on Tuesday in Bishnupur, South 24-Parganas, to protest the attack on party worker Adhir Pandit on Sunday.
