New Delhi, Feb. 13: The captains of the telecom industry and representatives of leading financial institutions will have a day-long tête-à-tête with communications and information technology minister Arun Shourie on Friday.
The who’s who of the telecom sector, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Asim Ghosh, C. Sivasankaran, Dilip Modi, Sashi Ruia, Rajan Nanda, R. P. Goenka, and T. V. Ramchandran, will represent the cellular industry. Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, J. J. Irani, Mahendra Nahata, Rajeev Meharotra, and S. Ramakrishnan will represent the basic and limited mobile operators.
Siddharth Ray will represent Data Access, the leading private international long distance operator.
The financial institutions that have made huge investments in the telecom sector since 1995 —like IDBI, ICICI, IDFC and ABN Amro — will also present their cases to the minister.
Sources said, “The minister has categorically stated that he will not set any agenda but will hear the telecom sector. He has asked us to present the problems faced by us and the possible solutions to the issues. He has also promised that he will be available all through the day and if needed till late evening to hear their presentations.”
“However, we do not expect any immediate solution from the minister. But we are hopeful that this initiative will help us to sit across the table and discuss the issues plaguing the sector,” sources added.
