Japan pig mania
Tokyo, Dec. 10 (Reuters): Depressed by rising unemployment and an uncertain future, more and more Japanese are turning to an unlikely source of solace — miniature pigs.
The latest boom on the Japanese pet scene, the tiny porkers are adored for their sweet nature and portly shapes. “They are nice and fat, also very lovable,” said Emi Ito, who works at Saiboku Livestock Farm Corp in Saitama, just north of Tokyo, and has been a mini-pig fan for seven years.
Winnipeg, Manitoba (Reuters): A bid to build 10,000 snowmen as a winter tourist attraction in Canada’s coldest provincial capital has got off to a lukewarm start — it’s cold in Winnipeg, but there isn’t any snow. “I’m praying for snow of course, but what can you do'” said Maria den Oudsten, president of the Rotary Clubs of Winnipeg, which is spearheading the campaign. Den Oudsten hit upon the idea of building snowmen to promote Winnipeg and build civic pride.
