Jeev, Atwal well placed

Calcutta: Indiaís star golfers Jeev Milkha Singh and Arjun Atwal have raised hopes of making it to the final stage of the US PGA Tourís qualifying school when they showed vast improvements on Day II of the second stage of the qualifying tournament.

This meet is underway at various golf courses in the US.

According to reports reaching here, the Jeev was tied for fifth at three-under 141 while Atwal was in joint 23rd at two-over 146, at the Black Horse Course in Seaside, California. The top-21 players will make the final stage of the qualifiers from here.

Daniel Chopra, a Swede of Indian origin, shot a four-under 68 at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney, Texas, and was tied at 16th with a two-under 142. The top 20 from this venue will make it to the final stage.

Jeev, who qualified for the final stage last year but could only get a limited exemption to the Tour, opened with a level-par 72 on Tuesday. He began tied for 19th but moved up to tied fifth after a three-under 69.

Jeevís was the dayís second-best card. Atwal bounced back into contention after a one-under 71. This followed his opening-round 75, which saw him languishing at the 44th place.
