Calcutta, Oct. 31: The state BJP today said it would renew its links with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamul Congress for the panchayat elections next May.
The party’s state unit president, Tathagata Roy, who replaced Asim Ghosh early this month amid escalating intra-party feuds, said he was keen on forging a “durable alliance” with Trinamul — a recalcitrant ally. Top Trinamul leaders, including Mamata, were cut up with Roy’s predecessor and his backers, especially Union minister Tapan Sikdar, for their open opposition towards the party.
Till Roy, brother of Trinamul leader Saugata Roy, appeared on the scene, the state BJP and Trinamul would spend time clawing each other. “There wasn’t much of an alliance earlier,” Roy admitted.
