Oct. 11: After the recent haul of land mines in Howrah from a bus headed for East Midnapore, authorities in the two Midnapore districts have stepped up security arrangements with the festival season in mind.
In West Midnapore, where the People’s War dominates several pockets, special measures have been taken in the forests of Banspahari, Belpahari and adjoining areas. The district authorities are co-ordinating with their Bankura counterparts to keep the border forests trouble free.
Superintendent of police K.C. Meena said there will be no let up in raids against People’s War activists during the pujas. Plainclothesmen will watch the pandals. Police camps have been set up in areas bordering Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa.
East Midnapore district magistrate Anil Verma said the coast guards have been alerted. The Central and state intelligence agencies are working in tandem to keep tab on the situation.
