Calcutta, May 24: 
The state government has decided to do away with the tradition of sending a delegation to the World Cup.

Finance minister Dr Asim Dasgupta said the chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, sports minister Shubhas Chakraborty and he had collectively taken the decision.

�It had been our policy to cut down on extra expenditure in every sector, and this was a part of that policy only,� explained Dr Dasgupta.

The government had been sending teams to World Cup finals since 1986.

Last time, a 13-strong party went to the finals held in France.

IFA�s floodlight plans

The IFA is planning to host some of the Super Division and Group A matches of the Calcutta League under floodlights. Talking to reporters, IFA joint-secretary Ranjit Gupta said: �Efforts are on to reactivate the flood-lights at the Mohun Bagan ground.�

Meanwhile, newly appointed IFA president Arun Poddar said that VSNL will take a satellite slot from July which will cut down the expenditure of ESPN and help them beam matches live.

Bagan�s catch

Nigerian defender Yakubu signed the inter-state transfer certificate in favour of Mohun Bagan Friday. He was with Bengal Mumbai Football Club last season. Bungo Singh left Bagan for Salgaocar. Bhratri Sangha�s Abhijit Mondal joined Dempo.

U-14 meet

Chandan Nagore Shiksha Niketan won the IFA under-14 football tournament at the Mohun Bagan ground Friday. In the final, they beat siliguri Tarai Tarapada Vidyalaya 2-1.
