The long wait for a new iPad appears to be coming to an end as Apple is hosting its ‘Let Loose’ event on May 7. Given the graphic on the invitation, it’s likely that new iPad models are coming your way.

The artwork features a hand holding an Apple Pencil, accompanied by a handwritten tagline, ‘Let Loose’. The world is long overdue for a new iPad as the company hasn’t updated the tablet line since 2022.

This is Apple’s first big show of 2024 and rumours have it that the show will highlight the rumoured OLED iPad Pro. The new tablets are expected to come with displays of 11.1-inch and 13-inch and will make use of Apple’s M3 chip, which is currently found in its MacBook lineup.

There is also a buzz that changes are being made to the Apple Pencil. A clue about the iPad stylus receiving an upgrade was found in the iOS 17.4 code. If ‘Pencil 3’ does appear, it will have pressure sensitivity.

The last time Apple launched a new generation Apple Pencil was in 2018 (we are not including the cheaper USB-C version that was introduced last year). But what more can it offer than the Pencil that’s been there for a long time? Perhaps Find My integration, which would help users easily track and find their lost stylus, just like with AirPods and AirTags. There could also be interchangeable magnetic tips.

Of course, the highlight of the event will be the iPad. There are rumours of both new iPad Air and iPad Pro models. If we do get to see an iPad Air 6, it will probably come with the M2 chip and there could also be a larger version with a 12.9-inch screen for the first time.

Further, there are reports of Apple having developed a redesigned Magic Keyboard that will make the device look more like a traditional laptop.

Budget iPads are not expected to be announced at the event nor is an upgrade for the iPad Mini but both these devices may get updated sometime in the fall.

Apple will likely showcase new creative uses for its higher-end iPads. The Pro models may also get front cameras centered on the landscape edge for better-framed video chats when docked with a keyboard, like the 10th-gen iPad has (and all MacBooks).

After May 7, Apple’s next big event is its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10 where iOS 18, macOS 15 and more are expected to be unveiled.
