Sources said Beauty Roy, 24, a resident of Nodhabari near Baikunthapur forest on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri, had entered the Bodaganj forest on Friday to collect firewood when a wild elephant kicked her to death.

As the news spread, a team led by Chiranjit Pal, the range officer of Belakoba forest range of Baikunthapur forest division, reached the spot. A team from Bhorer Alo police station reached the village.

As they tried to recover the body, angry villagers toppled the forest department’s vehicle and damaged the police vehicle.

As foresters and cops protested, an altercation with villagers ensued. The foresters and cops were outnumbered, dragged to a local school ground and beaten up.

Eventually, some people intervened and around noon foresters and police recovered the woman's body for post-mortem.

Senior police officers said complaints had been filed against the attackers.
