Videos of Germany-based YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, who has emerged as a strong anti-establishment voice of late, seem to have come in handy for the “save democracy” brigade, whether political or apolitical, during the ongoing election campaign.

in Assam.

Though sharing of the videos started just before the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 19, it gathered momentum in the second phase that ended on April 26.

Rathee’s recent videos being shared widely included “Is India becoming a Dictatorship?”. The video gathered over 24 million views and is still counting. His other video topics include Reality of Unemployment Crisis, The WhatsApp Mafia and the Electoral Bonds Scam.

Banker Mintu Kalita, student Arshik Deka of Nagaon, editor-activist Paresh Malakar, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) general secretary Pradyut Bhuyan in Guwahati, lawyer Bismoi Das of Barpeta and political activist Ashraful Islam of Dhubri confirmed in separate interactions with The Telegraph that Rathee’s videos are being widely circulated in the state, especially by the youth.

Kalita and Deka said the videos break complex issues into simple terms basing them on facts, which appeal to the common viewers. “These will help people become aware of the critical issues which the nation is facing and people can make informed choices when it comes to voting,” Kalita said.

Barpeta and Dhubri vote on May 7
