In a bid to facilitate the internationalisation of the Higher Educational Institutes of India (HEIs) and attract more and more international students to the Indian institutes, the Unversity Grants Commission (UGC) has framed guidelines for the creation of supernumerary seats for international students in the under-graduate and post-graduate programmes at the colleges and universities.

The commission has asked the HEIs to adopt and implement the guidelines to facilitate the admission of foreign students at the institutes.

As per the guidelines, HEIs may create up to 25 percent supernumerary seats for international students, over and above their total sanctioned enrolment for Undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.

According to UGC, the implementation of these guidelines will facilitate smooth and viable admission of international students in the higher educational institutes of the country and will create a favourable environment for attracting international students to the India HEIs and make India a preferred destination for international students.

Internationalisation of the Higher Educational Institutes of the country is an essential aspect of the National Education Policy 2020 which urges higher educational institutes to increase their international outreach.

The supernumerary seats will be allocated only to international students, and if any such seat remains vacant, it shall not be allocated to anyone other than an international student, mentions the UGC guidelines.
