YOU Broadband Selects Ruckus Wireless to Deliver Managed Wi-Fi Services in India’s Largest Airport

Ruckus Wireless™ today announced that YOU Broadband has selected and deployed its ZoneFlex™ 802.11n system as a managed Wi-Fi service offering within India’s largest airport, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) operated by Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL).

YOU Broadband has installed Ruckus ZoneFlex 7300 series 802.11n smart Wi-Fi access points throughout CSIA’s international and domestic terminals and is initially offering free multimegabit Wi-Fi services to millions passengers that transit the airport every year. CSIA operates five terminals over an operational area of 1,450 acres (5.9 km2) – handling over 29.1 million passengers and 670,235 tons of cargo in 2010.

The Ruckus Wireless network, within CSIA, is managed by redundant ZoneDirector™ 3100 smart WLAN controllers located at YOU Broadband’s network operations center. FlexMaster, a system-wide Wi-Fi services management platform developed by Ruckus, is also being used for gathering users statistics, monitoring network traffic, generating trending information and remote diagnostics and troubleshooting.

YOU Broadband is leveraging Wi-Fi within CSIA to offer mobile gaming, free Internet access and ultimately video on demand services to airport visitors. YOU Broadband plans to partner with device makers and content providers to offer value-added content services over Wi-Fi. The vast Wi-Fi network will also be available to support airport operation applications as well as airport vendors requiring network connectivity. Since launching the service in April, YOU Broadband has seen a big spike in wireless usage to nearly 3,000 connections per day with 50% of users staying online for 30 minutes or more.

“What we have done at Chhatrapati Shivaji is simply a harbinger of things to come,” said EVS Chakravarthy, Managing Director and CEO of YOU Broadband. “Changing market conditions, driven by an explosion of data traffic from wireless-only devices, present a new paradigm for fixed-line service providers and huge opportunities to offer new services and increase ARPU.”

One of the leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in India with over 2,000 employees, 300,000 broadband subscribers and 1200 km of optical fiber optic cabling spanning 12 cities, YOU Broadband is leveraging its fixed line assets to increase its footprint by adding advanced Wi-Fi technology from Ruckus Wireless to offer value-added managed wireless services to enterprises across India.

With renewed interest in Wi-Fi, service providers around the world are looking to offer managed enterprise wireless LAN services within hotels, public venues, universities and other locations. This allows service providers to easily extend the availability of branded broadband services, attract new subscribers and provide a valuable network services to enterprises interested in divesting from having to own and operate elaborate network infrastructure.

Following Users Habits Requires More Reliable Wireless Connectivity

Chakravarthy noted that while broadband access started with desktops and laptops, it is quickly moving to handhelds, smart phones and tablet devices – creating an exponential growth in data traffic.

Forecasts for India project that mobile-only data users will burst from 3.8 million in 2011 to over 308 million by 2015, according to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index Report on Global Mobile Data. “We must follow the habits of our customers who are now on the move with multiple wireless devices in their hands. The only way to do that is to combine reliable wireless access with very high quality fixed line assets. Our partnership with Ruckus is essential to enabling this strategy.”

The combination of new mobile Internet applications and smart handheld devices is driving the need for better and more reliable Wi-Fi services and systems – especially in locations where macro 3G/4G cellular infrastructure is cost prohibitive and fixed lines are sparse.

“Given the install based of Wi-Fi within almost every conceivable device, never before has the need for reliable Wi-Fi been more urgent,” said Chakravarthy. “User expectations for ‘always on and everywhere’ wireless connectivity is transforming how networks are being conceived and built. And Wi-Fi is front and center in those discussions. The problem is that conventional Wi-Fi, as it was originally conceived, is just not up for this challenge.”

Looking for Better Wi-Fi

After extensive evaluation of leading wireless equipment and technology, YOU Broadband selected Ruckus Wireless due to its inherent support for carrier-class services. Unlike traditional enterprise Wi-Fi systems, Ruckus integrates patented technology including adaptive antenna arrays, sophisticated quality of service capabilities and smart meshing techniques to enable a licensed-like wireless experience over the unlicensed band – but at a fraction of the cost and at much higher speeds.

“We’ve simply been astounded by the Wi-Fi performance to date,” said Chakravarthy. “It’s common for users to experience connection speeds of up to 3 Mbps. But more important, the system was extremely simple to deploy with a robust feature set that has proven to be highly scalable and easy to remotely manage from a carrier perspective.”

The Ruckus ZoneFlex system has now become the wireless standard for a number of airports around the world including: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Budget Terminal in Singapore and Larnaca airport in Cyprus.
