Before dying in hospital, teenager alleges rape

Midnapore, Aug. 31: A severely injured teenager found dumped this afternoon in a West Midnapore bus stop told doctors just before she died that she was raped by two youths.

The 17-year-old girl was first spotted by a trekker driver, groaning and bleeding profusely. The driver knew the girl’s family.

She was taken to a Ghatal hospital, where she died after half an hour.

Police have detained two persons. The girl, whose father is a farm labourer, had dropped out of school after Class VI. She was returning from a relative’s house when two youths on a motorcycle allegedly abducted her.

A doctor at the hospital said: “The girl was bleeding profusely. We got very little time to treat her. Before she died, she told us that two youths had abducted her and taken her to a remote place on a motorcycle. They raped her there before dumping her at the bus stop.”

According to the police, the trekker driver, who was passing by the bus stop, saw the bleeding girl around 3.30pm and informed her father.

“The girl’s father rushed to the bus stop, but by then, residents had taken her to the hospital. When the father reached the hospital, his daughter had died,” said Sudip Ghosal, the officer in charge of Ghatal police station.

It was not immediately clear for how long the injured girl lay unnoticed at the bus stop.

Her father has lodged a complaint of rape and murder at Ghatal police station.

Her mother, a homemaker, said the girl had left home around 10.30am to visit the relative. “We did not know anything until the trekker driver informed us.”

The police said they were examining a cellphone found on the girl.

“We are going through the phone records. After preliminary investigation, we have detained two persons. We are interrogating them,” a police officer said.
