Calcutta: Just as Ashim Biswas’s name was announced as the Man of the Match, it was greeted with the choicest of expletives from 7,000-odd Mohammedan Sporting fans that had assembled at the Barasat Stadium.
The supporters couldn’t really be blamed as Ashim alone missed three to four sitters as Mohammedan Sporting were held to a 1-1 draw by BNR in Saturday’s CFL Championship Round tie.
In other words, coach Fuja Tope’s men wasted a golden opportunity to go atop the league table. For the time being, they will have to remain satisfied at the second position with Tollygunge Agragami at the top, thanks to a better goal average.
After a barren first session, Imran Khan earned Mohammedan Sporting the lead, 11 minutes after the interval with a header off Bijoy Maddi’s centre from the right. Things looked to be heading Mohammedan Sporting’s way, but a defensive lapse in the 76th minute, together with goalkeeper Arnab Das Sharma’s poor judgement robbed them of full points.
Arnab was way out of position, as the header from an unmarked Dipankar Das rolled into an open net. Besides, a groin injury to Adelaja Somide forced Tope to keep him on the bench till the 77th minute.
