Chennai recruit misses century

Guwahati, Aug. 27: Local man Syed Mohammad missed a century by a whisker as Assam were all out for 247 in 90.1 overs on the first day of their two-day Buchi Babu Trophy invitation cricket tournament semi-final match against Hyderabad at IC Guru Nanak ground in Chennai today.

Hyderabad were 20 for no loss in eight overs at the close of the day’s play. Put in to bat, Assam lost a couple of quick wickets in opener Pallav Das and first down man Rajdeep Das, but was consolidated by Rishav Das (31, 4x4), Gokul Sharma (25, 5x4) and Sibshankar Roy (23, 3x4) with their patient knocks.

Chennai recruit Syed Mohammad played a steady innings of 92 runs off 173 balls. His knock was laced with six hits to the fence and five over the ropes. Tarjinder Singh (22, 2x4, 1x6) and Sarupam Purakayastha (18, 2x4), Dhiraj Goswami (15, 2x4) and Abu Nechim Ahmed (13, 2x4) were the other notable scorers for the side.

Paceman Akash Bhandari was the pick of the Hyderabad bowlers having scalped three for 79, while teammates Ashish Reddy and Mehdi Hasan shared two each for 28 and 81 runs respectively. Openers Tanmay Agarwal and P. Akshat Reddy were at the crease for Hyderabad on four and 15 (3x4) at the end of the day.

They will need 228 more runs in 92 overs to win the match tomorrow.

Soccer camp: The AIFF Grassroots Coaching Course, organised by the Assam Football Association, got under way at the Sports Authority of India ground here today.

Basketball

An executive committee meeting of the Basketball Association of Assam will be held at the Assam Olympic Association Conference Hall here from 11am tomorrow. All the office-bearers and members have been asked to attend the meeting.
