Award for green activist

Sivasagar, Aug. 25: Jadav Payeng, credited with planting trees in 1,360 hectares of sandbar near Kokilamukh in Jorhat district, was conferred the Shilpi Award by Sivasagar Press Club today for his contribution to environment conservation.

The award was conferred at a function commemorating the 12th edition of Anjali Dutta Memorial Lecture, which was held today at the Sivasagar Natya Mandir.

The award was presented by Saumar Jyoti Mahanta, president of Sivasagar Press Club. It contained a citation, a memento and Rs 5,000 in cash.

Inaugurating the lecture, journalist Hyder Hussain lamented that Assamese people were not proud of their heritage and stressed on developing Sivasagar as a historical town.

Rupam Saikia, faculty member of Dibrugarh University and an expert on higher education management, delivered the lecture on Present Education System, Problems and Solutions.

Forty-two meritorious students who passed their high school and higher secondary examinations were provided scholarships at the function. Senior journalist Guna Baruah was also felicitated.
