Shillong, Aug. 23: Meghalaya police have booked a former member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and two others for allegedly extorting money in the name of a militant outfit.
Obis S. Sangma, who had represented Rongjeng constituency in the council in 1994 as an Independent member, had surrendered along with Shanting N. Marak and Riben, alias Gerald S. Sangma, the police said.
The former member of the council and the two others had allegedly extorted money from different sections of society in the name of the A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA).
“The trio surrendered at Rongjeng police station in East Garo Hills yesterday. FIRs had already been lodged against them at Rongjeng and Songsak police stations, also under East Garo Hills,” a police officer said.
According to the police, ANLA was formed in October 2013. As per a government statement which was placed before the Assembly in June, the group has a strength of 10 to 15 cadres.
