Calcutta, Aug. 23: The family of a visually challenged Class VIII student today lodged a police complaint accusing a Group D employee of raping her in a classroom of her North 24-Parganas’ school four months ago.
The 15-year-old girl’s father, a farmer, said he had not lodged a complaint earlier because “some associates” of the accused had threatened him against going to the police.
He also alleged that a local Trinamul activist and land broker had offered him Rs 11,000 to hush the matter up.
District Trinamul leaders denied any link with the broker. Repeated calls to the broker’s phone went unanswered.
The accused Group D employee, Biswanath Konai, has been arrested.
“On April 11 afternoon, my daughter was preparing to leave for home after classes when Konai entered the room, locked it from inside and raped her. He warned her against telling anybody,” the girl’s father said.
The girl informed her parents about the alleged rape on returning home.
Her father said Konai and some of his associates stopped him on the road when he was going to the school the next day to inform the authorities.
“They threatened me with dire consequences. I did not date approach the police,” the father said.
A few days later, the broker allegedly offered the father Rs 11,000.
“We refused the money. I had been racked with guilt because I had failed to do anything even though the accused was roaming around freely. So I lodged the complaint,” he said.
The school authorities said they came to know about the incident after the police arrived to conduct a probe.
C. Sudhakar, deputy commissioner of police, Barrackpore commissionerate, said Konai would be produced in court tomorrow.
A 32-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by three youths in Siliguri this morning. The police have arrested one of the accused.
According to police sources, the woman was going to see her sister-in-law in hospital when the three youths waylaid her on a deserted stretch, sprayed something that made her unconscious, took her to a godown and took turns raping her.
The sources said the woman’s brother had alleged that the youths had filmed the crime.
