Sports act as emotional salve for cops

For the First Citizen of Jharkhand, the police force is the face of the state administration.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 10th State-level Police Sports Competition at JAP-1 Ground in Doranda, Ranchi, on Friday, governor Syed Ahmed said, “Police rajya ke shashan ka chehra hota hain. Isliye police prashashan ko sada apna kaam puri imandari aur nistha ke saath karna chahiye (The police force is to be face of the state administration. Thus, officers must work with honesty and commitment.”

He also asked the men in uniform to take help from common people during investigation of any criminal case, as delay in probe often invites criticism.

“For crime control, the officers need to work dynamically. If success does not come on time, criticism is obvious. For better and effective investigation, I think the police force must seek co-operation and support from the common people,” Ahmed added.

According to the governor, only seeking help from the public would not better their image.

“Behave properly with people and listen to the complainant while patiently while registering the case,” he suggested.

But, for Ahmed, the public too has a role to play. He urged the people to believe and rely on law, adding that one should never think registration of FIR as useless.

The governor also took to opportunity to underline the importance of sports by adding that it helps develop “team spirit, co-operation, struggling capacity and discipline”.

Quoting a couplet from a Harivanshrai Bachchan’s poem, director-general Rajeev Kumar also spoke about sportsmen spirit.

Asafalta ek chunauti hai sweekar karo/kya kami reh gayi dekho aur sudhaar karo/ jab tak na safal ho neend chain ki tyago tum sangharshon ka maidaan chhodh mat bhago tum/kuch kiye bina hi jai jai kaar nahi hoti/himmat karne waalon ki haar nahi hoti,” Kimar said as he read a few lines from the verse.

Talking about the purpose of the sports meet additional director-general (JAP) K.N. Choubey said the event was like an emotional safety valve for the personnel who often stay apart from their families and struggle to maintain the law and order.

As many as 1,150 sports persons from the police department gathered at the venue. Of these, a group of 24 JAP jawans presented a band display under the leadership of constable Diwakar Lama. Crackers were burst on the occasion.

Although the inauguration was supposed to be held on Thursday, it got postponed due to PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Ranchi. The meet will conclude on August 24.
