Tata Steel sports department has lined up a host of run-up events starting Thursday to mark National Sports Day and the birth anniversary of Sir Dorabji Tata on August 29.
The list includes archery, athletics, inter-sports training centre football, basketball and swimming.
The events will start with a basketball tournament for cadets of different Tata academies and sports training centres at JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur.
However, unlike previous years, this time the events will not be hosted at the sole venue. “This year, the events will not be confined to JRD Tata Sports Complex only. It will spread to other venues of the steel city. We are looking forward to make the National Sports Day a memorable one and thus want more and more people to participate,” said Farzan Heerjee, chief (sports and guest relations) of Tata Steel during a news meet on Wednesday.
Besides Jamshedpur, the events will also be conducted in Bokaro, Ranchi and Kalinganagar (Odisha).
According to Heerjee, the athletics event for women of Tata Steel Rural Development Society will be held at Chapai village of East Singhbhum on Friday. An inter-institution soccer tourney will be played at JRD Tata Sports Complex the following day.
Sunday will see a walkathon at the same venue where members of Steelym Gymnasium are likely to participate.
From here, the events go to West Bokaro that will host the archery tourney and athletics events for sports feeder centres on August 25.
The city will once again host swimming and athletics events for schools and communities, respectively.
The unified football tournament for special athletes will be played at TFA grounds on August 27.
Those with hearing impairment will also get an opportunity to display their sporting skills on the same day at JRD Tata Sports Complex. Football and cross-country races for communities and employees, respectively, have been earmarked for Kalinganagar.
An open walkathon will be organised at Jogger’s Park in Sonari and Agrico grounds on August 29. Curtains will come down on the week-long events with a hockey tourney in Ranchi on the same day that also marks the birthday of hockey icon Dhyan Chand.
Of all these events, an exhibition match between East Bengal and combined teams of Tata Steel and Tata Football Academy on August 29 promises to be the main crowd-puller.
Tata Steel sports department head Charles Borromeo said the team from Calcutta would arrive on August 28.
“We will take the players for a tour to Centre for Excellence and Jubilee Park on the eve of the match. The soccer tie will be open to all,” he said, adding that the Calcutta outfit had last played an exhibition match against TFA in 2009.
