Around 1,150 police personnel, including 100 women and 1,050 men from different parts of the state, will assemble in the state capital to participate in the 10th Jharkhand State Police Sports Competition-2014 from Thursday.

They will take part in various disciplines, including hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, handball, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing, archery and weightlifting, besides athletics till August 24, the concluding day of the competition.

Though the meet will start on Thursday, Governor Syed Ahmed will formally inaugurate it on Friday at 12.30pm, the ceremony postponed by a day in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ranchi on Thursday.

While football, hockey and boxing will be held at Birsa Munda Football Stadium, Morabadi; Astroturf Stadium, Morabadi; and JAP-1 ground, Doranda, respectively; handball, gymnastics, athletics, kabaddi, volleyball and archery will be organised at mega sports complex in Hotwar.

Weightlifting will be organised at Sona Gym, Ratu Road.

ADG (JAP) K.N. Choubey, who addressed a press conference with D.I.G (JAP) Suman Gupta to provide details of the sports meet at Khukri Guest House at JAP-1 campus in Doranda, said the idea behind the event was to provide some relief to policemen.

“This is an annual event. The purpose of the event is to give some relief to police personnel, who have to perform their duty amid heavy stress. Apart from this, by promoting games and sports we can develop into a disciplined and constructive society,” Choubey said.

DIG Gupta agreed. “A national team will be selected after the meet and for this a selection committee will pick promising players from each discipline,” he said.
