Amit Shah rally in city poll zone on Sept 7

Calcutta, Aug. 19: Amit Shah will address a rally in Calcutta on September 7 during his maiden visit to Bengal as BJP national president.

The rally, which was earlier supposed to be held in Siliguri, is likely to be organised in the Chowringhee Assembly constituency, where a bypoll will be held on September 13 along with Basirhat South in North 24-Parganas. The BJP is yet to announce the names of its candidates for the two seats.

“We are scouting for a venue in the Chowringeee Assembly area for Amitji’s public rally. We will finalise the venue in a day or two,” state BJP president Rahul Sinha said this afternoon.

According to him, the venue of a two-day state committee meeting that will precede the rally has also been shifted to Calcutta from Siliguri “in view of the bypolls”.

“Amitji will arrive in Calcutta on the morning of September 7 and speak at the concluding session of the two-day meeting. Later in the day, he will address the public rally before leaving for Delhi,” Sinha said.

According to the earlier schedule, Shah was supposed to address a rally at Siliguri’s Bagha Jatin Park after attending the state committee meeting, which begins on September 6.

Bengal BJP leaders said the proposed rally in Calcutta, where Shah would be the main speaker, would boost cadres days before the Chowringhee bypoll and drum up support for the party nominee.
