Two girls die in landslide

Shillong, Aug. 16: Two minor girls were killed in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district yesterday and three persons were rescued after they were trapped in debris for hours as flash floods and landslides occurred at several places following incessant rainfall.

A landslide at Mawdngung village, about 45km from here, under Sohiong police outpost, killed Sarana Thabah, 13, and Sathi Thabah, 6. The landslide had buried the house where they were staying.

Three persons were buried under debris for hours following a landslide at Keating Road near the Assembly secretariat here.

Personnel of Meghalaya police and the Meghalaya Fire and Emergency Service rescued Johar Uddin, 45, Md Sukur Ali, 50, and Akbar Ali, 35. The rescue operation lasted six hours.

In Umkhrah river, flash floods inundated the Pynthorbah area here and many residents had to be shifted to a community hall.

A landslide near Lad Bakli under Dangar in East Khasi Hills disrupted flow of traffic while a footbridge connecting Tyrsad and five other villages was washed away.

A landslide at Bishnupur affected some buildings.
