Student hits teacher

Aug. 13: A student of an engineering college in Kolaghat today hit a teacher on the head with an iron rod for pulling him up for cheating during an examination two months ago.

Hirak Maity, an assistant professor of the College of Engineering and Management, has been diagnosed with a blood clot in his brain and has been admitted to a Calcutta hospital.

Mansur Habibullah, a fourth-year electronics and instrumentation student said to be suffering from depression and “adjustment disorder”, has been arrested.

Mansur, a Cooch Behar resident who has admitted to hitting Maity, accused the assistant professor of harassing him for the past few months.

Mansur attacked Maity a day after the results of the sixth semester were declared and the student found that he had failed in four of the 10 subjects.

The student has been charged with attempt to murder.

When this correspondent spoke to Mansur at Kolaghat police station, he accused Maity of “mental torture”.

“For the past six months, Hirak sir had been mentally torturing me. So I attacked him. I could not take an internal exam six months ago because I was ill. Hirak sir had then called my father but he could not come. Since then, Hirak sir had been behaving rudely with me. I became a mental patient because of this and had been consulting a psychiatrist,” Mansur said.

Mansur alleged that seven other students were caught cheating during the semester in June but “no action was taken against them”.

Mansur’s younger brother Moinul Hasan said Mansur got “agitated easily”.
