Woman kills daughter

Agartala, Aug. 12: A mother clubbed her daughter to death last night allegedly over a property dispute at Trinathpur village in Jirania subdivision of West Tripura.

According to police, Sabitri Das, 50, had been quarrelling regularly with her elder daughter Sumitra over a one-acre land purchased by her father Mantu, 53.

“Sumitra’s parents had tried to convince her that after their death the land would be inherited by the two daughters. But Sumitra was insistent on immediate partition of the property,” a source said.

Sumitra, 30, was married to a small trader in Telimura subdivision and her sister Sunetra, 28, married a sub-staff in the state rural development department.

On Sunday night, Sabitri invited Sumitra over phone to visit her paternal home in Trinathpur village under Ranir Bazar police station. Sumitra arrived in Trinathpur yesterday morning along with her three-year-old daughter, according to sources.

Once again Sumitra demanded immediate partition of property and started quarrelling with her mother. Sumitra’s father Mantu, an asthma patient, kept quiet throughout the row.

Around 7 last evening, Sabitri took a burning stick from the kitchen and started beating her daughter, who collapsed on the ground and her mother thrust the stick in her mouth.

Hearing screams, local residents rushed to the spot. They beat up Sabitri and handed her over to Jirania Bazar police station. They then shifted Sumitra to the sub-divisional hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

The police have registered a case against Sabitri.
