FCI tame Navajyoti Club

- Rakesh Das sculpts 3-1 victory; Maharana thrash City Police 4-1

Guwahati, Aug. 11: A superb performance by forward Rakesh Das steered Food Corporation of India Sports Club to register a convincing 3-1 victory over Navajyoti Club in their match of the RG Baruah Guwahati Sports Association Super Division Football League at ground one of Nehru Stadium here today.

In a match which witnessed some speedy moves, Das completed his brace in style while another of his strikes forced an own goal.

Despite equalising in the first half, Navajyoti players failed to keep the FCI men at bay as their frequent inroads ultimately led them to concede two more goals.

A well-elevated cross by Amir Biswas on the right flank to Nigerian recruit Nwokwu Michael Okwudici saw the latter’s header missing the crossbar by a whisker in the sixth minute.

Das, on having received a pass from Sourab Chutiya, took a powerful strike from the edge of the box only to find an awestruck Navajyoti custodian Subhajit Barman witnessing the ball finding the back of the net in the 11th minute.

Das took full advantage of the space provided to him by the Navajyoti defence line.

Navajyoti’s desperate attempts to find an equaliser finally succeeded in the 34th minute with a fine header by Okwudici. Biswas, making his way from the right flank, set the perfect elevation for Okwudici to place the ball into the net through a header.

The excitement in the Navajyoti bench was shortlived as Das’s attempt from the right flank inside the box took defender Jerry K. Sunday’s deflection to concede an own goal in the 37th minute. Finding the ball in his feet off a Sourab Chutiya pass in the midfield, Das made his way into the box before setting the ball rolling.

FCI were down to 10 men after Momocha Singh was shown the red card for being booked twice in the match.

With the referee whistling the start of the second half, FCI players didn’t show any signs of playing with a man less. Kailash Gogoi on the right flank provided Das with a gem of a cross as the latter’s gentle tap on the ball was enough to rub salt into Navajyoti Club’s wounds in the 49th minute.

Navajyoti missed out on a genuine goal scoring opportunity in the 57th minute as Jerry K. Sunday’s header was well saved by Sabilal Konwar in the goalline.

Ishak Sangma’s full-blooded volley failed to trouble FCI glovesman Bitul Khanikar as the ball went way above the target in the 63rd minute.

Substitute Jetison Marak’s attempt from the right flank took the aerial curve but Khanikar didn’t face much of a difficulty in having a firm grip on the ball in the 86th minute.

In the Jibeswar Goswami GSA A Division Football League, Maharana Athletic Club thrashed City Police 4-1 at the second ground here today.

Praneswar Rabha scored twice for Maharana with goals in the third and 17th minutes respectively while Biswamitra Basumatary scored the third goal in the 65th minute. Substitute Bishnu Rabha found the back of the net in the additional minutes of full time while Satrughna Konwar scored the lone goal for City Police in the 74th minute.
