New Delhi, Aug. 11: The NDA government has supported in the Supreme Court its predecessor UPA’s decision to provide reservation benefits to the politically dominant Jat community on the list of OBCs in nine states, including poll-bound Haryana.
On April 10, the apex court had directed the Centre to file an affidavit justifying the inclusion. The court was dealing with a petition challenging the inclusion as politically motivated and announced just a day before the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls had come into force.
The previous government had rejected a suggestion of the National Commission for Backward Classes against the inclusion of the Jats on the OBC list. The community was socially and economically advanced, the commission felt.
