Tezpur, Aug. 10: Assam Rifles, Shillong, claimed the 54th Sohanlal Dugar Shield football tournament title, edging past holders Oil India FC, Duliajan 5-3 via tiebreakers in the final at Polo Ground here today.
Albeit an early lead, Oil India could not hold on to it and the contesting affair ended in a 1-1 draw during regulation time.
Sishuram Chutia fashioned a 26th-minute lead for Oil India finding the net off a Zadinmawia Hmar pass from the top of the box.
However, the Assam Rifles men did not wait for the second session to find the equaliser as L Shanta Singh equalised in the 43rd minute off a calculated cross from playmaker D. Mukhim.
The second half was a rather lack-lustre affair with the ball mostly restricted to the midfield.
The Duliajan side were reduced to a 10-man side in the 68th minute after Chutia was given the marching orders for double booking with the yellow card.
In the penalty shootout, Assam Rifles glovesman Manish Chandra Singh made brilliant saves of kicks by Biplob Sonowal and Raju Konwar to clinch the match.
Mintu Boro and Zaidinmawia Hmar managed to beat Singh with their shots.
All the four shooters from Assam Rifles — Akum Ao, D. Mukhim, Ajit Singh and Tachi Bhutia — managed to outsmart Oil India keeper Ritesh Murthy with their shots.
K. Nabot Singh and M. Kamei of Assam were adjudged the Best Player and scorer respectively of the tournament.
Romit Momin of Jorhat Town Club was named the Best Goalkeeper.
Bokakhat XI were adjudged the Most Disciplined Team.
