A 30-year-old youth from Alipore, who had been missing with his wife since Friday, was found hanging in a hotel room in Rourkela on Saturday.
Subhankar Dey’s wife Laboni is still missing but police suspect, based on a suicide note left by her husband, that she is dead as well.
The police suspect Laboni was murdered on the way to Rourkela, after which Subhankar killed himself.
Neighbours at the Presidency jail quarters — Subhankar’s father Sukhen is a jail warder — said the couple were married three months ago.
Police said Subhankar and Laboni had left home together on Friday but did not inform his parents where they were headed to.
While the suicide note is said to have mentioned a family dispute as the reason for the suicide, the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.
“Subhankar and his parents had moved to the jail quarters about four months back. He got married after that. We are not aware of any marital discord,” said neighbour Amalendu Das.
The police said Subhankar had checked into a hotel in the Odisha steel city on Saturday morning. “He was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a bedsheet,” said an officer.
The hotel management alerted the police around 11.30am on Saturday after repeated knocks on the room door and calls to the youth went unanswered.
“Subhankar’s parents had filed a missing diary on Friday afternoon. According to reports received from Rourkela, he had checked into the hotel alone. His wife did not accompany him even though they had left home together,” said a senior officer of Alipore police station.
Subhankar’s parents have left for Rourkela.
