Calcutta: Ranty Martins is enjoying his role as a ‘mentor’.
The senior pro, who will be playing his first match in East Bengal colours when the red-and-gold brigade meet Mohammedan Sporting on Sunday, will be partnering newcomer Jiten Murmu upfront. Coach Armando Colaco has entrusted Ranty with guiding the youngster.
“Oh, I am enjoying my role as a mentor… These youngsters (Murmu, Deepak Tirkey, Manas Sarkar) have bright future. Give them some time and they will deliver. Initially there was a communication problem. But, now, we have sorted it out.
“I speak to them constantly… Giving them the confidence… The main thing is to make use of the vacant spaces on the field. That’s what I have told them… To complement his striking partner… Jiten is learning fast. So are Manas and Tirkey… The CFL also is a very good platform for the youngsters to impress the coach,” Ranty said.
Ranty is expecting a good result on Sunday. “It’s a new season… We have prepared well. It will be the first match of the season… So there will be some grey areas.
“Still we should get a favourable result. I have no idea about Mohammedan Sporting. But this club has the history and will not bow down without giving a fight.”
Ranty injured his ankle during one of the practice sessions, but said there is nothing to worry about.
“It’s okay. I may not play for 90 minutes though. I just want to play as many matches as possible in the beginning of the season. That gives me the confidence for the battles ahead,” he said.
