Bumpy road ahead of bypoll

Bhagalpur, Aug. 8: Dilapidated roads and defunct communication have virtually turned the district into an island.

Political parties, however, have started levelling allegations against each other even though 12 days are left for the bypoll for the Bhagalpur Assembly segment. The damage to bridges on the entry and exit points in the eastern, western and southern direction of Bhagalpur city has already crippled normal life. Travelling on the Vikramshila Ganga Bridge connecting Bhagalpur with north Bihar, Bengal and northeast states, has became hard owing to the conditions of its approach paths.

“Parties have started campaigns but are not serious over finding a solution to improve roads,” said Ramprakesh, a social worker.

Chandrani Karmakar, a homemaker, lost her temper when asked about her choice in the coming bypoll. “I have to purchase daily items and vegetables at high prices owing to snapping of the road connectivity. The roads have also turned death traps for vehicles and it is very difficult for us to walk on the roads,” she said.

Madhu Jaiswal, another resident, said: “This time, I have decided to press the Nota (none of the above) button on August 21 as the leaders don’t have time to address basic problems such as roads.”

“For the past 24 years, the former BJP MLA (Ashwini Kumar Choubey who represented Bhagalpur Assembly seat from 1995) remained inactive to take up any people related issues. Now, we have to face difficulties. People have started asking about the performances of these MLAs,” said Ajit Sharma, the official Congress candidate.

The JDU MLA from Nathnagar Assembly seat in Bhagalpur district, Ajay Mandal, lambasted the officials concerned for not taking an interest on the basic infrastructure in Bhagalpur since long.

Nabhay Kumar Choudhary, the BJP candidate, in his campaigns has lambasted the state government for ignoring problems of the commom man but has had to face odd questions from voters who wanted to know about the performance by Choubey when BJP was in alliance with the JDU.
