Threat finger at Trinamul

Alipurduar, Aug. 6: The RSP sahasabhadipati of the Jalpaiguri zilla parishad wrote to the superintendent of police of Alipurduar yesterday, asking him to provide security after threats by alleged Trinamul Congress supporters who asked her to join the party.

Jacinta Lakra Saha said: “For the past few days, Trinamul activists have been constantly calling me and coming to my house. I had no option other than complaining to the superintendent of Alipurduar. I have requested him to provide sufficient security to me.”

Shukla Ghosh Brahma, another CPM member of Jalpaiguri zilla parishad, has also said that she has been getting threat calls from alleged Trinamul supporters. “I have been getting threats from Trinamul activists continuously for past few days and they are asking me to join their party. I will meet the SP and request him to provide security to me.”

The zilla parishad is run by the Left Front.

Left Front leaders yesterday met the district magistrate and the superintendent of police, Alipurduar, and submitted a memorandum against the threats by the alleged Trinamul supporters.

Nirmal Das, an ex-RSP MLA from Alipurduar was a member of the delegation, which met the district heads yesterday. Das said: “The way Trinamul is snatching our members is unconstitutional as well as illegal. Nobody is joining the party wilfully.”

Sourav Chakraborty, the president of Alipurduar district committee of Trinamul, denied the allegations. “All allegations are baseless. We are not asking anybody to join our party.”

Anup Jaiswal, the SP of Alipurduar, said: “I have forwarded the letter to Birpara police station to investigate and take necessary action.”
