Greater Noida, Aug. 6 (PTI): The Centre has plans to launch from August 21 booking of website names in the Devnagari script, used for writing Hindi, Marathi, Dogri and eight other official languages.
“Booking of domain names in Devnagari script is planned to start from August 21. The extension will be .bharat in Devnagari script like commonly used .com and .in extensions,” the National Internet Exchange of India CEO, Govind, said on the sidelines of the first Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum.
Booking of each website or domain name will cost Rs 350. For sub-domains, the charge will be Rs 250 each.
For the first two months, booking of domain names will be open to companies with trademark or copyright on names like brands, government organisations and reputable commercial firms. Then it will be opened to the rest.
“Language should be no barrier in access to the Internet. We are working to start domain name booking in seven scripts. We will start with Devnagari, then in 3-4 months we expect to start services in Gujarati followed by other languages,” Govind said.
