Coal trucks seized

Tura, Aug. 4: Two coal-laden trucks were seized by officials of the district council forest check-gate at Rongkhon, near Phulbari in the West Garo Hills today.

The trucks bearing number AS 01-EC0360 and ML09A-6033 were stopped by an official on patrol duty on the Dadengre-Phulbari route around 4am.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has put a complete ban on coal mining and transportation in Meghalaya. The Garo hills autonomous district council officials have said the consignment was for Enamul Islam, a resident of Chibinang in the West Garo Hills, about 105km from Tura.

GNLA cadre killed

A suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadre was killed in an encounter in the West Garo Hills today.

A flush-out operation was conducted by the Jat Regiment of the army posted near Tikrikilla, along the Assam-Meghalaya border. The security forces launched the operation between 1.30am and 2am at Kodomsali village, under Tikrikilla police station.
