Bank robbed, cashier hurt

Itanagar, Aug. 2: Three men robbed the Vijaya Bank branch on Rajiv Gandhi University campus, located on the outskirts of this town, today and shot cashier Joydeep Chettri in the leg before fleeing.

The robbery took place as employees of the branch, which is located on the lush green campus of Arunachal Pradesh’s premier university and caters primarily to students and faculty, were hoping to leave for home early on a quiet day.

The three armed men arrived on motorbikes around noon, managed to get past security, collected their loot from bank employees at gunpoint and escaped to the nearby forest on foot, leaving their motorbikes behind. It was yet not known how much cash they had looted.

Chettri, who is undergoing medical treatment at the general hospital, said one of the men could have been armed with an air pistol.

Inspector-general I.D. Shukla said the police have descriptions of the culprits and enough evidence to capture the three soon. He said their job would have made been easier if the bank’s CCTV cameras had been working.
