Sit-in over citizenship

Dhubri, Aug. 2: Activists of Sadou Assam Bengali Yuva Chatra Federation will stage a sit-in at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on August 5 to demand implementation of the Assam government’s proposal to the Centre to grant citizenship to the Hindu refugees from Bangladesh.

The Assam cabinet has approved the proposal to allow citizenship status to refugees who fled Bangladesh because of religious persecution and discrimination and entered Assam after March 24, 1971, a source in the federation said.

“We will stage a sit-in at Jantar Mantar and press for implementation of the proposal,” a senior member of the federation said today. A delegation of the federation left for New Delhi last night.

Youth held: Jatin Chandra Roy, 18, of Dumardoh village in Dhubri district was arrested last night following the recovery of an IED weighing 9kg from the backyard of his house. However, nearly 100 villagers thronged Gauripur police station, demanding Roy’s unconditional release saying he was innocent. The district unit of AKRSU also appealed to the police to release him.
