Jail Road beat Moran

DUGAR SHIELD

Tezpur, Aug. 1: Jail Road Club, Jorhat, edged past favourites Moran Town Club 2-1 in a match of the 54th Sohanlal Dugar Shield football tournament organised by Tezpur District Sports Association at Tezpur Polo Ground here today.

In an intense, evenly-fought match, striker Kennedy Deori gave the Jorhat team the vital breakthrough, capitalising on a ball from right-winger Lohit Moran to beat Moran TC custodian Jun Buragohain from inside the box in the 17th minute.

Four minutes later, Moran equalised through a brilliant solo effort from the midfield by striker Premjit Singh that caught the Jorhat custodian Pranjal Mohan off-guard.

The next phase of play saw both teams toil hard and create chances to gain the upper hand.

In the 37th minute, Lohit made no mistake in connecting a ball from Kennedy to give Jail Road the lead. Lohitís shot from outside the box was strong enough to beat the Moran goalkeeper.

No goals were scored in the second half, thanks to both teams tightening their defence.

Things, however, turned a little ungainly as the match progressed with a player from either side being shown the door by the referee. Jorhatís Saharjyoti Kalita was shown the red card for kicking his opponent while Moran Town Clubís Y. Ram Singh was penalised for a couple of fouls.

Tomorrow, New Model Sports Club, Udalguri, will take on Barhungkha Club, Kokrajhar.
