Cong plays tough on insurance

New Delhi, July 31: The insurance bill could not be taken in the Rajya Sabha today as the Congress joined other Opposition parties in seeking more time to examine it.

But the Congress, which had wanted to pass the key reform when the UPA was in power, indicated it may not block the bill when it is taken up again on Monday.

The Opposition demanded that the bill, which seeks to raise FDI in insurance to 49 per cent in line with budget proposals, be sent to a select panel.

The Narendra Modi government needs the Congress’s support in the upper House as the ruling BJP does not have the numbers. “We will review the matter again tomorrow and take a decision,” a former Congress minister said, accepting the party wanted the bill passed and was averse to being seen like the BJP which opposed it earlier but changed its stance in power.
