No-trust letter

Alipurduar, July 30: Trinamul councillors of the Alipurduar municipality today submitted a letter to the chairman and the executive officer of the civic body to bring in a no-confidence motion against the Left Front-run civic board.

While Trinamul has 12 councillors, the Left Front has eight and the Congress does not have a single member at the 20-ward municipality.

Ashish Dutta, the town block president of Trinamul, said: “We have 12 members and we are the majority. We want to bring in a no-confidence motion against the (Left Front) chairman of the board and he should resign immediately.”

In last year’s civic poll, Left Front got eight seats and Trinamul and the Congress got six each. The Left formed the board. Later, three Congress councillors joined Trinamul and on July 21, Dipto Chatterjee, chairman of the board, his wife and his brother-in-law joined Trinamul in Calcutta taking the ruling party’s tally to 12.

The RSP’s Goutam Talukdar, vice-chairman of the civic board, said: “During our term, we tried to start few work for the people but because of the declaration of Parliament poll, we could not start work. Recently, we have started giving pure drinking water by setting up a project in town.”

He added: “Today evening, we will sit together to discuss the next course of action. We will have to prove majority in a month’s time. We have information that people are happy with the activities of the board.”
