Alipurduar, July 30: A mother today alleged that local Trinamul leaders in Alipurduar village tried to settle the rape of her daughter by calling a kangaroo court and told her not to go to police.
The woman also alleged that the police initially refused to take her complaint.
Today, she went to the Akash Magharia, the additional superintendent of police, Alipurduar, and filed the complaint of rape of her 14-year-old daughter by a driver.
The girl was alone at home when Babu Majumder, the driver of a private vehicle, allegedly raped her on Sunday.
“I had gone out of the house with my elder daughter around 10am on Sunday to buy goods from the local market. My younger daughter who studies in Class VII was alone at home. At that time, Majumder entered the house and raped my daughter,” the mother said.
When the lady returned home, she saw the girl lying on the ground, bleeding. “My daughter told me what had happened. The same day, I went to the local police station to lodge a complaint against Majumder, but the on-duty officer refused to accept it,” said the woman.
A Trinamul gram panchayat member and the president of the party’s zonal committee came to know about the incident. “The two leaders approached me and asked me not to lodge a police complaint against the accused driver,” said the homemaker.
A Trinamul office-bearer said if any leader was found to have tried to suppress the investigation in a rape case, they would face action.
The lady’s husband, a day wage labourer, works in Kerala.
The woman alleged that she had gone to the police station at least 10 times to lodge the complaint.
“But the police refused to register the complaint. The two Trinamul leaders also called a kangaroo court yesterday and told me to attend it. But I didn’t go,” the mother said.
The two Trinamul leaders couldn’t be contacted.
This morning, the woman, along with the girl, went to Alipurduar police officer Magharia.
“Magharia asked police officers to take the girl to Alipurduar hospital for a medical examination. The ASP also called up the circle inspector and the officer in charge of the police station to know why they didn’t take the complaint from the woman. Magharia has ordered a departmental probe against the two officers,” said a source.
The ASP said: “We have started a probe into the charge of rape. I will also look into the allegation that the police had refused to take the complaint from the girl’s mother.”
“The party will take strong action against Trinamul leaders if they have tried to shield a rape accused. There is no question of the party supporting such persons. We demand that police arrest the accused man immediately,” the Trinamul office-bearer said.
