Teacher abducted in Garo hills

Tura, July 30: A woman schoolteacher, Sandai Sangma, 30, was today abducted by suspected militants of A’chik National Liberation Cooperation Army (ANCLA) from a remote location in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills.

Sangma was travelling on her scooter when she was allegedly stopped around 1.30pm and whisked away at gunpoint at Dokasaram near Resubelpara, about 120km from Tura. “The location is remote and hence there is no confirmation as to how many people were involved. We found her scooter close to Dokasaram. We suspect it to be the handiwork of ANLCA”, said Jerry Marak, superintendent of police, North Garo Hills.

The North Garo Hills Primary Schoolteachers Association has condemned the incident. “It is a very sad day for us. She was working for children in a remote village where most are hesitant to go,” said a release. Tenybirth Momin, 27, son of a sub-inspector C.K. Marak, was kidnapped from Domeanti near Resubelpara in North Garo Hills on Sunday. Police say the abductors have demanded Rs 15 lakh for his release. An operation is on to rescue Momin.
