The disfigured body of a 17-year-old boy was found near a construction site in densely populated Devnagar in Sitaramdera police station area of Jamshedpur in the small hours of Tuesday.
While it is yet to be ascertained who killed Sunny Karmakar, a resident of New Devnagar, and why, preliminary probe suggests jealousy spurred by a love affair. Police say they have rounded up one of the four suspects, all in the same age group as the victim, for interrogation.
According to father Mantu Karmakar, the teenager worked as a guard with a construction company and was on duty when he was brutally attacked. “He had no enemies. He was only doing his job. Why would someone kill him at his workplace? Police must find out the persons responsible for my son’s murder,” the bereaved man said.
Local residents said someone spotted the body near the makeshift godown of an under-construction house in the area around 1am. Police recovered the body and sent it to MGM Medical College in Dimna for post-mortem. A case of murder has been registered against unidentified persons on the basis of Karmakar’s statement.
Sitaramdera OC Shushil Kumar Chowdhury said that Sunny had deep gashes in the neck, chest, stomach and shoulders, suggesting that there were more than one assailant. “Though investigations are at a preliminary stage, the teenager’s murder seems to be the outcome of an affair with a girl. Those who killed him are about his age. We have picked up one of the four suspects and are grilling him,” the officer said.
Chowdhury further said that Sunny was addicted to alcohol and was under its influence when he went on duty at the construction site on Monday night. “The youth in police custody is expected to spill the names and whereabouts of the others, including a girl, and we will be able to crack the murder,” he added.
This is the second shocking murder of a youth in two months.
On June 16, the very decomposed body of one Amandeep Singh (24) was found behind Golmuri Golf Course, 2km from where Sunny’s body was found on Tuesday. A resident of Nanak Nagar, Amandeep had gone to attend a wedding in Adityapur on June 4, but never returned home. The murder remains unsolved.
