SHORT TAKES

Griezmann for Atletico

Madrid: Spanish champions Atletico Madrid have moved to bolster their attack by agreeing to sign France World Cup winger Antoine Griezmann from Real Sociedad.

“Atletico de Madrid and Real Sociedad have reached an agreement for the transfer of Antoine Griezmann,” Atletico said in a statement on Monday. “The young French football player will undergo the corresponding medical examination before signing the contract with our club.”

New signing

London: Arsenal’s capture of Calum Chambers, the Southampton defender, pushed their summer spending to almost 60 million Monday. It is the most the club has ever spent in a single transfer window as Arsene Wenger, the manager, continues to make good on his promise that he now has the funds available to keep pace with the Premier League's super-heavyweights. The FA Cup winners have paid 12 million for the 19-year-old full back, but that fee could rise as high as 16 million if various performance and appearance-related clauses are met. Wenger had already lavished 43 million on Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina, meaning that he has spent more than the 48 million outlay made in the summer of 2011.

Advocaat view

Belgrade: Serbia have top quality players and there will be no excuse for failure to qualify for the 2016 European Championship in France, new coach Dick Advocaat said on Monday. “I found Serbia’s offer interesting because of the squad’s talent and quality,” the 66-year-old Dutchman said.

Kabaddi tourney

Mumbai: Dabang Delhi notched up their first victory in the Pro Kabaddi League after defeating Puneri Paltan 35-31, on Monday.
