New Model triumph in opener

Tezpur, July 27: New Model Sports Club, Udaguri, today trounced Sonabheel Tea Estate, Tezpur, by 8-0 goals in the inaugural match of the 54th Sohanlal Dugar Shield football tournament organised by Tezpur District Sports Association at Tezpur polo ground.

In a one-sided match, the local crowd had little to cheer as the Udalguri boys made mincemeat of a weak defence of the local team, with striker Jona Daimary opening the account in the 19th minute.

A brace each by midfielders Derhasao Basumataray and Goundra Daimary compounded Sonabheelís woes.

Derhasao scored his goals in the 36th and 50th minutes, while Goundra struck in the 39th and the 40th minutes.

New Model skipper Niku Basumatary added another goal three minutes before the lemon break.

The tempo remained the same in the second half with Sonabheel unable to create any chances.

In the 70th minute, right-winger Figo Daimary scored another goal for an unassailable 7-0 lead.

Five minutes later, midfielder Ramanuj Baglary made no mistake in making it 8-0.
