Private tutor Puja Singh, who was caught on camera brutally assaulting a three-year-old boy in a Lake Town flat, was arrested from a relative’s house in Rashbehari Avenue on Friday evening.
Debasish Dhar, the additional commissioner of police, Bidhannagar commissionerate said: “We found her hiding place in the morning. She was arrested around 7pm and will be produced in court on Saturday.”
Puja was staying in the house with her husband Rohit, father-in-law Jagmohan and her daughter. The police said a relative in Sambalpur, Odisha, gave away Puja’s whereabouts.
The child’s father said the family was relieved that she had been arrested. “Whatever happened to my child should not happen to any other child. We had CCTV cameras in our home... but many people don’t have such surveillance equipment in their house,” he said.
She had been absconding since television channels aired footage from a CCTV camera in the child’s bedroom showing her holding the kid upside down, hurling him on a mattress and pummelling him in between rummaging through the closets in the room.
The boy’s mother was alerted by his cries but couldn’t enter the room because Puja had locked the door from inside. She then switched on the CCTV monitor in the other room, witnessing live the horror.
