Poireikhongjil triumph

Imphal, July 24: Poireikhongjil High School, Imphal East, beat Victory High School, Thoubal, by a solitary goal to emerge the winner of the State-Level Under-17 Girls’ Subroto Mukherjee Football Tournament at Artificial Turf, Khuman Lampak sports complex today.

The win enables Poireikhongjil High School to represent the state in the girls’ category of the national-level Subroto Mukherjee Cup, which will be held later this year in New Delhi.

Victory High were reduced to nine players as the rest failed the medical test.

Th. Janda Devi scored the solitary goal for Poireikhongjil in the eighth minute.

Though Victory High increased their pace in the second half, they failed to convert.

Udalguri thrashed Dima Hasao 4-0 at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati today, reports our correspondent from Guwahati.

In some of the other matches, Kamrup Rural edged past Karbi Anglong by a solitary goal via tiebreakers while Hailakandi got the better of Golaghat 3-0.

Dhemaji eased past Tinsukia 3-0 while North Lakhimpur beat Jorhat 1-0. Dibrugarh beat Darrang 1-0.

NSA review: Former administrators have called for a review of progress made by the National Sports Academy, Imphal, as most inmates have performed poorly in sports.

Ch. Birendra Singh (retd IAS) made the observation while delivering a speech during the 8th Foundation Day celebration of the academy at Khuman Lampak sports complex today.

The academy was established on July 24, 2007.

Youth affairs and sports commissioner R.K. Nimai Singh spoke of tremendous changes that the academy has witnessed since its inception and sought the incorporation of sports science at the earliest.
