Jorhat, July 22: The court of assistant district and sessions judge (Jorhat) today sentenced Deepjyoti Phukan, 21, to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on charges of kidnapping and raping a minor.
The convict will have to undergo another two months’ rigorous imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
The judge also sentenced Phukan to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 on charges of kidnapping. Both the sentences will run concurrently.
Judge Khogen Dohotia convicted Phukan, a resident of Tamulsiga under Gaurisagar police station of Siva-sagar district under Sections 376 and 366 of IPC.
In another case, Dohotia sent two rape accused — Gangaram Sharma and Birensi Bharali — to judicial custody till July 31 after rejecting their petition to extend bail. The two, both employees of Boi-sakata estate in Titabar, were accused of raping a woman at the garden on April 26, 2010.
They had failed to appear on two earlier hearing dates. Today, the duo surrendered before the court with a plea to grant them extension of an earlier bail order issued by the same court.
